Every major city is proud of its cultural institutions and San Francisco museums contribute to tourism in that city. The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art is one of the most frequently visited and has been in existence since 1935, when it opened with a collection based on the 20th century. The word, modern, was not present until 1975. The collection outgrew its original premises in the Civic Center and re-located to new buildings on Third Street in the SoMa district, next to the Yerba Buena Gardens. Many important artists are represented here, including Jackson Pollock, Paul Klee and Marcel Duchamp. There are also works by feted American photographer, Ansel Adams. The Palace of Fine Arts will appeal to those more interested in the traditional. Situated in the Marina District, the building dates from 1915 and is based on the architectural style of ancient Rome and Greece. A major renovation took place during the 1960s. The setting for this museum, which includes a lagoon, makes it the most elegant of all the museums in San Francisco. Many forms of wildlife can be seen here, including swans, ducks, frogs, turtles, and geese. The Exploratorium part of the museum opened in 1969 and is a highly regarded interactive science museum. The museum is often chosen as a venue for weddings and many Tv shows and movies have used the building as a location. The world of natural history is on show at The California Academy of Sciences and is one of the largest museums of its kind in the world. Its present location is in Golden Gate Park and the academy goes back to 1853 when it was founded. It stood out as an organization that encouraged female scientists, something that was rare in the 19th century. The Steinhart Aquarium and the Morrison Planetarium are two of the most popular departments in the museum and the astronomy shows at the planetarium are well attended. San Francisco museums engage in research and there has been important work conducted here into environmental issues. There are permanent and temporary displays for the public to enjoy. The Life Through Time gallery is a particular favorite and contains exhibits on evolution and paleontology. This city attracts many visitors and the museums in San Francisco are a large part of the reason for so many tourists. In addition, there are first class hotels and restaurants and landmarks, such as the Golden Gate Bridge.
